Gabriel did not know how it started. The only thing he knew; he was living in a post apocalyptic world since the day he was born. Lonely and hopeless, he put his hand on the empty rack wishing that it was filled with food. He was running out of them. The temperature of the basement shot up to 55 degrees as yesterday’s was 30 degrees. Gabriel thought the heat above had probably risen to 100 degrees. The world had become a disastrous state because of greedy mankind. Thanks to them, the temperature of the earth shot up higher each day forcing everybody to live underground.
Sweat beads streamed profusely from on top of his head before it connected at the end of his chin. His face turned beet-root red and his dirty shirt was drenched with sweat due to the unbearable heat. He felt as though he was in a supreme misery, additionally when the network of pipes gushed out hot gases with hissing sound.
December had passed. Gabriel did not feel any signs of winter. The things he experienced were excruciating. The hot steamy pipes gave an overrated burning sensation as he accidentally touched them. Consequently, layers of scorched skin spotted everywhere on his arms. When he brought a cup of coffee up the exit tunnel near the surface, it boiled. It went the same to the rice, eggs, sausages, canned sardines and instant noodles.
He thought he could survive until he found out that his food supplies were finished on one of his rough days. He ignored it until he turned really skinny out of hunger. His bone structure looked brittle and fragile. There was only one word to describe him; malnourished. Finally, he decided to search for food at the very face of the earth and one way to do that: go out at night when the temperature lowered down before the break of dawn.
As the dark veiled, he began his mission. He took all his muscles to search for food in every block but it seems fruitless. Nothing could be found. The clock was ticking slowly. He crept in his petty pace from hour to hour seeking for a destination that was never found. Mightily exhausted he was as his stomach shrieked for food in protest. The sign ‘Live or Die Trying’ he saw back at a petrol station he passed by, motivated him to satisfy his hunger. Simultaneously, his lust to eat was portrayed in his eyes.
Suddenly, his eyes halted to an abandoned building half eaten by the raging fire. What left was just the front part of the building which was made up of red bricks; so tough it only hardens when put under high temperature heat. Gabriel’s wild guess, it was the main office. Dust scattered everywhere when he started to walk towards an opened door that led him to a room deep inside. Towards the end, he saw a door and walks towards it. The rusty knobs felt cold in his grip. He stood there and twisted it before opened the door and there it was, a whole stacks of boxes piling up to the ceiling. What makes it even more interesting was the label: TONY & CO “SARDINES IN CAN”. He smiled to his ears. It was quite a while he ever done his prayer. That time, he did it. When he finished his prayer, he took two boxes home; enough to survive within a fortnight. At that precise moment, it was the break of dawn.
Gabriel was over the moon on his way back as his mission almost accomplished before suddenly he saw a source of a great trouble like the hornet’s nest. The golden sun was planted at the horizon, shining gleefully. Feeling in contrary, Gabriel ran hastily. Suddenly, he hit a large rock and the cans were thrown out of the vulnerable boxes and scattered he tried to collect the cans but the situation took him on the thinnest ice. He sensed one thing he feared the most; the enraged fire-producing ray.
He could see it coming. The angry blaze produced by the scorching sun licked up everything on its way. He ran quickly to avoid, when eventually he was cornered down by it. The raging inferno lashed its anger to everything that blocked its path. It danced victoriously to the rhythm of the wind, ready to engulf him. Suddenly, life flashed before him. He was an obedient son. His parents were killed by the ‘sun ray’ in front of him. The reminiscence made him drew bullets of tear on his flawless cheeks. Soon, he will join his parents in heaven. When he thought that the time had come, suddenly, he heard someone screamed “Hey! Get inside!” he saw, few metres away, a man frantically signalled him to get inside the very building he was cornered at. It was a race against time, but he managed to cheat death and he knew it was not the end, it was just a beginning.
